Are you sitting comfortably in your home? A roof over your head, warmth on a cold night, and a place to call your own? For many, these simple comforts are taken for granted, but for others in Jersey, homelessness is a harsh reality.
That’s why Sanctuary Trust’s annual Sleep Out is such an important event.
Homelessness is a challenge that affects the entire community, and Jersey Mutual is proud to have supported the Sanctuary Trust’s annual Sleep Out as a sponsor. Held on Friday, 22nd November 2024, at Pier Road car park, the event brought together over 120 participants who braved the cold to raise funds and awareness for homelessness in Jersey.
A Night of Empathy and Action
The Sleep Out, organised by Sanctuary Trust, gave participants – including Housing Minister Sam Mézec – a small glimpse of the struggles faced by those without a home. From 8 pm to 6 am, they experienced the discomfort of sleeping outdoors with only sleeping bags and layers for warmth.
This year’s Sleep Out raised an impressive £29,000. These funds are critical to supporting Sanctuary Trust’s vital work, including providing accommodation, counselling, and outreach services for homeless men in Jersey.
As the island’s only Mutual Society, owned by its Members and the home of home insurance, Jersey Mutual is deeply committed to supporting initiatives that create a tangible impact in the community we proudly serve.
Community Spirit
A huge well done to our Compliance Manager, Sarah, and her friend Emma, who raised over £1,000 between them – an incredible effort! Their dedication shows the spirit of teamwork and generosity that makes events like the Sleep Out so impactful.
We also extend our gratitude to the Sanctuary Trust team for organising such a meaningful event and to everyone who participated or supported. Your efforts truly make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
The Importance of Supporting Sanctuary Trust
Sanctuary Trust plays a crucial role in helping homeless men rebuild their lives and regain independence. Homelessness can happen to anyone, often triggered by events such as job loss, mental health struggles, or relationship breakdowns. By addressing immediate needs and offering long-term support, Sanctuary Trust provides hope and dignity to those in crisis.
Looking Ahead
The Sleep Out is part of Sanctuary Trust’s ongoing efforts to raise funds and awareness for homelessness in Jersey. In March 2025, the charity’s chair, Tim Ringsdore, will undertake a “week without a home” challenge, living without a permanent residence and on a limited budget. This initiative aims to deepen understanding of homelessness and inspire further support for this vital cause.
A Call to Action
The funds raised will enable Sanctuary Trust to continue its essential work, but the need for support doesn’t end here.
Jersey Mutual encourages everyone to stay involved – whether by donating, volunteering, or participating in future events.
