Jersey Mutual in the Community

Jersey Mutual’s purpose has always been to go beyond insuring the homes of their members, with the objective of wider support of the community. From sponsoring the Gorey Fete to the St Martin’s Bonfire, we look to help our island community and give back to Jersey, in addition to looking after our family’s homes.  As the home of home insurance, we love projects that provide for the community and involve a ‘home’ in any way.

The Grow Project

Build you own bug home.

On hearing about the Grow Project by Thrive Jersey, we wanted to support this inspirational initiative; ‘Home is where the heart is, and a lot of love is going into this community-led project, uniting those that wish to build a beautiful new home for those that wish to unite in nature and also the wild creatures that can exist within’.

What you'll need to do.

More about GROW

The team at Jersey Mutual love the GROW team’s vision of working together to create interconnectedness between human wellbeing and the natural environment.  GROW wants to help people who may have lost their purpose or feel isolated, encouraging them to engage with an opportunity to make a difference. There are so many different elements to this fantastic initiative.

The GROW field is next door to the Surville Cemetery; land that has been kindly gifted by St.Helier until further notice. As part of the first phase, volunteers have been busy planting fruit trees and pollinating flowers on the land. The field is looking beautiful, filled with colourful flowers and insects enjoying their new home.

Education is also key, and the project aims to teach children from as young as three years old up to adults. Jersey Mutual has sponsored the Education programme, which will meet some of the components of the curriculum at every level, broadening knowledge whilst making it relevant to the project in a fun and engaging way.

Students can work on speaking and listening, reading and writing skills, mathematics, science, art, design and technology, geography, history, language, cooking, nutrition, music, health, wellbeing and physical – all in the great outdoors! They can also learn about the food journey from planting, nourishing, picking, preparing, cooking, waste to composting – all organic, all zero waste.

With an all-inclusive outlook, Jersey Mutual is also working with GROW in creating homes for the local wildlife.  If you visit the field now, you will see a Jersey Mutual ‘Bug Mansion’, built by Grow Volunteers and Jersey Mencap and there’s also a hedgehog bungalow and hawk house!

There will be a myriad of ways in which adult education will take place too. Adults will monitor the wildlife living in the field, including earthworms, bats, reptiles, botany, insects, butterflies and birds. It will become a home from home for many; the plan is for the community space to host music, art and drama events. The natural setting is benefiting everyone, focusing on mindfulness and mental health.

“We are so grateful to Jersey Mutual for their support. Without sponsorship support, we can’t do this initiative for the community. If you look at the resources that we need for this project, that’s been enabled by Jersey Mutual.” Rose Anne, Grow Volunteer.
